What Is a Dental Crown?

A custom cap that restores a damaged tooth

A dental crown is a custom-made cap that covers the visible portion of a tooth to restore its shape, size, strength, and appearance. Crowns are cemented into place and fully encase the tooth above the gum line. They are used to protect a weakened tooth, rebuild a broken one, cover a tooth after a root canal, or improve the aesthetics of a discolored or misshapen tooth.

Material Options

Types of Dental Crowns We Offer

We recommend the crown material based on tooth location, bite force, budget and aesthetic priority.
Most Natural

Porcelain (E-max)

Lithium disilicate ceramic with excellent translucency. The gold standard for front teeth and smile makeovers where appearance is the priority.
Best for: Front teeth, smile design
Lifespan: 10–15+ years
From $350
Most Durable

Zirconia

Extremely strong ceramic that resists chipping and cracking. Ideal for molars, patients who grind their teeth, or implant-supported crowns under heavy bite force.
Best for: Molars, implants, bruxism
Lifespan: 15–20+ years
From $450
Budget Option

Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal

A metal alloy core with a porcelain outer layer — combines strength and acceptable aesthetics. Longstanding, proven choice when budget is the main driver.
Best for: Back teeth, budget-friendly
Lifespan: 10–15 years
From $250

Indications

When Is a Dental Crown Necessary?

  • After a root canal — protects the weakened tooth from fracture
  • Large fillings where little healthy tooth remains
  • Cracked or broken teeth that cannot be restored with a filling
  • Worn-down teeth from grinding or erosion
  • Cover a dental implant — the final step after osseointegration
  • Support a dental bridge on healthy neighboring teeth
  • Cosmetic reasons — severe discoloration or misshapen teeth
  • Full smile makeover as part of an aesthetic rehabilitation plan

The Process

The Crown Procedure at Our Clinic

1
Evaluation & Diagnosis
We examine the affected tooth, take digital X-rays, and confirm whether a crown is the best option or if additional treatment (such as a root canal) is required first.
2
Tooth Preparation
Under local anesthesia, the tooth is gently reshaped to make room for the crown. Any decay is removed and the structure is built up if needed.
3
Digital Impression & Shade Match
A digital impression (or traditional mold) is taken. We select the exact shade to match your natural teeth and send the specifications to our in-house ceramist.
4
Temporary Crown
A temporary crown is placed to protect the tooth and maintain aesthetics while the permanent crown is crafted (typically 3–7 days).
5
Fitting & Cementation
We try the permanent crown, check fit, bite, and color match. Once approved, it is cemented in place. The entire procedure typically requires 2–3 visits over one week.

Aftercare

Caring for Your Dental Crown

With proper care, high-quality crowns last 10 to 20+ years. Zirconia and E-max porcelain are particularly resistant to staining and wear.

Daily routine: Brush twice a day and floss carefully around the crown margin — this is where plaque accumulates and can cause decay underneath the crown. An interdental brush or water flosser helps keep the gum line clean.

Avoid: biting hard objects (ice, pens, hard candy), using your teeth as tools, and chewing on the crown side immediately after cementation. If you grind your teeth at night, we may recommend a custom night guard to extend the crown’s lifespan.

Professional check-ups: a cleaning every 6 months lets us monitor the crown margin, surrounding gum health, and the tooth’s integrity over time. Any local dentist can perform these routine visits.

Common Questions

Dental Crowns FAQs

How long does a dental crown last?
Porcelain and porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns typically last 10–15 years. Zirconia crowns often last 15–20+ years with proper care. Longevity depends on oral hygiene, bite force, and whether you grind your teeth.
How many visits does a crown take?
Typically 2–3 appointments over 5–7 business days: initial preparation and impression, temporary crown placement, and final fitting and cementation.
Which crown material should I choose?
For front teeth where aesthetics are critical, we usually recommend E-max porcelain. For molars or patients with heavy bite force, zirconia offers superior strength. Porcelain-fused-to-metal remains a reliable budget choice for back teeth.
Is the procedure painful?
The tooth preparation is performed under local anesthesia and is not painful. Some sensitivity to hot or cold may persist for a few days after the temporary crown is placed. Discomfort typically resolves once the permanent crown is cemented.
Do crowns look natural?
Yes. Modern E-max porcelain and layered zirconia crowns mimic the translucency of natural enamel. Shade matching is done in-person under neutral lighting to ensure the crown blends with your adjacent teeth.
Can a crown be placed on an implant?
Yes. After an implant integrates with the bone (3–6 months), a custom crown is attached to an abutment screwed into the implant. Zirconia is often preferred for implant crowns due to strength and biocompatibility.
Why are crowns cheaper in Colombia?
Lower operational and laboratory costs, favorable currency exchange, and a competitive local market. The materials (E-max, zirconia) and the sterilization protocols are the same international standards used in the US.
What happens if my crown chips or falls out?
Minor chips on porcelain can sometimes be polished. A fractured crown typically needs replacement. If a crown loosens or falls out, contact us immediately via WhatsApp — we guide you on next steps and coordinate with local dentists if needed.
