What Is Professional Whitening?

Clinical-grade bleaching supervised by a dentist

Professional teeth whitening uses medical-grade hydrogen or carbamide peroxide gels applied under clinical supervision. The peroxide breaks down stain molecules inside the enamel and dentin, producing a visible shade change that over-the-counter strips cannot match. Performed correctly, it is safe, effective, and does not damage enamel.

The right choice

It depends on your sensitivity, your schedule and how dramatic a change you want. A combined protocol pairs the speed of in-office with the uniformity of take-home for the strongest result.

The Process

How In-Office Whitening Works

1

Evaluation & Shade Baseline

We check for active decay, gum issues and existing restorations (veneers, crowns and fillings do not whiten). Your initial shade is recorded so progress is measurable.

2

Professional Cleaning

A thorough cleaning removes surface plaque and tartar so the gel acts uniformly on clean enamel. This step alone often brightens the smile noticeably.

3

Gum Protection Barrier

A resin barrier is applied over the gum line to isolate soft tissue from the peroxide gel, and lip retractors keep cheeks and lips clear of the treatment area.

4

Whitening Agent & Activation

Professional-grade peroxide gel is applied to the front teeth in 15–20 minute cycles, activated by LED light. Typically 2–3 cycles per visit.

5

Desensitizing & Final Shade

A fluoride and desensitizing gel is applied to reduce post-treatment sensitivity. The final shade is recorded and aftercare instructions are given.

Candidacy

Who Are Good Candidates for Whitening?

Ideal Candidates
  • Yellowish stains from coffee, tea, wine, tobacco
  • Age-related enamel darkening
  • Healthy teeth and gums (no active decay)
  • Adults 18+ with fully erupted permanent teeth
  • Goal of a visible but natural shade change
Less Effective / Treat First
  • Tetracycline stains — respond slowly, may need veneers
  • Fillings, crowns or veneers in the smile line (do not whiten)
  • Severe sensitivity — desensitization first
  • Pregnant or nursing patients
  • Cracked teeth or exposed roots — treat first
Aftercare

Keeping Your New White Smile

The first 48 hours are critical — enamel is temporarily more porous. Avoid coffee, tea, red wine, dark sodas, berries, tomato sauce, curry and smoking during this window. Water, milk, clear soups and white foods are safe.

Maintenance: reduce stain-heavy drinks (or use a straw), brush twice a day with a non-abrasive whitening toothpaste, and schedule a professional cleaning every 6 months. Most patients maintain results 1–3 years with basic habits.

Touch-ups: using your custom trays for 2–3 nights every 6–12 months restores the original shade. Refill gel kits are inexpensive and last for multiple touch-ups.

Common Questions

Teeth Whitening FAQs

How many shades can I expect to change?
Most patients see 3 to 6 shade improvements with in-office whitening in one visit. Combined protocols may push this to 6 to 8 shades. The final result depends on the type and severity of the original stains.
Does whitening damage enamel?
No, when performed under clinical supervision. Current peroxide-based protocols are considered safe for enamel. Over-the-counter misuse or excessive frequency can cause temporary sensitivity, which is why professional supervision matters.
Is whitening painful?
The procedure itself is not painful. Some patients experience mild sensitivity to cold for 24 to 48 hours afterwards. A desensitizing gel is applied at the end of the session and recommended for sensitive patients.
How long do results last?
Typically 1 to 3 years with good habits. Coffee, tea, red wine and smoking shorten the duration. Occasional take-home touch-ups (2 to 3 nights every 6 to 12 months) maintain results long-term.
Do whitening strips or kiosks work the same?
Over-the-counter products use much lower peroxide concentrations and a one-size-fits-all tray or strip, which often misses areas and can irritate gums. Results are subtle at best and may cause uneven whitening or sensitivity without supervision.
Will my fillings or crowns whiten too?
No. Whitening only affects natural tooth structure. Composite fillings, porcelain veneers and crowns keep their original shade. If you have visible restorations in your smile line, we evaluate whether they should be replaced after whitening to match the new color.
How long does an in-office session take?
Between 60 and 90 minutes including preparation, gum protection, 2 to 3 whitening cycles, and desensitizing. You leave with visible results the same day.
Can I combine whitening with other treatments?
Yes — whitening is often scheduled before veneers, bonding or crowns so the restorations are matched to the new whiter shade. For a full smile makeover we coordinate the sequence for you.
